Permanent Immigration

The FSTP was developed to reflect current labor market needs and to provide a mechanism by which qualified foreign trades people could apply for residency in Canada. The industries and trades experiencing a shortage in qualified employees include carpentry, electrical, construction, mechanics, heavy equipment operators, logging and forestry, mining and quarrying, oil and gas, agricultural services, etc.

The new Federal Skilled Trades Program (FTSC) will allow individuals with job offers or appropriate certification to work in certain occupations to obtain Canadian Permanent Residency in any Canadian Province or Territory other than Quebec.

In order to qualify for a Canada Immigration (Permanent Resident) Visa, Canadian Federal Skilled Trades (Professional) applicants must fulfill the following minimum requirements:

1. Have offers of employment from up to two employers in Canada of at least one year duration OR a Certificate of Qualification from a provincial or territorial body;
2. Provide proof of basic language proficiency from a designated language testing organization, demonstrating that the applicant meets the minimum threshold set by the Minister (Canadian Level Benchmark (CLB) 5 for speaking and listening, 4 for reading and writing);
3. Have obtained twenty-four months of qualified work experience in the skilled trade in the last five years; and
4. Be able to demonstrate the skills and experience and that they have performed the essential duties of the occupation.

 

The program will accept a maximum of 3000 total applications in its first year in order to ensure speedy processing times.

 

Within the overall 3000 application limit, CIC will be accepting up to 100 applications for each of the skilled trade occupations set out in the following
